Journalists, writers, researchers, filmmakers and photographers can apply for this fellowship.

The University of Witwatersrand’s Journalism Department offers the Ruth First Fellowship to support a new generation of public intellectuals to pursue an in-depth project.

This year’s topic is “violence and rage” in South Africa. The project should be groundbreaking and politically and socially relevant.

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend and research costs. They will be expected to devote at least 50 percent of their time between May and August 2016 to the fellowship.

The deadline to apply is April 22.
