Journalist Safety training

The ACOS Alliance is an unprecedented coalition of news organizations, freelance journalist associations and press freedom organizations working together to champion safe and responsible journalistic practices for freelance and local journalists worldwide. The Alliance facilitates collaborative initiatives to improve the safety of journalists exposed to danger.

Over the last year, ACOS has brought together news organizations and NGOs around joined safety training activities. This Standard Application Form aims at building a database of freelance journalists in need of safety training. This form should help us to reach out to individual freelancers when relevant opportunities for safety training arise, and to coordinate a response to current needs in partnership with news organizations and NGOs.

As we are launching this form, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is offering an opportunity for 12 freelance journalists to have access to a 3 day hostile environment safety training course, to take place in Virginia, USA from 14 – 16 September. The Foley Training Grants cover course fees, including accommodation and food for the duration of the course, but do not cover travel to and from the course venue. The course is delivered by Pangolin, a recognized course provider working for several major news organizations. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance once they have completed the course. If you are interested in applying to the Foley Training Grants, please complete this form by Friday 1 September. Applications that don’t get selected for this course will be kept on file, and freelancers may be contacted in relation to future opportunities. If you need more information about the upcoming course in Virginia, please email
